Hasted Prize 2009

The Kent Archaeological Society’s biennial Hasted Prize for 2009 has been awarded to Dr Toby Huitson for his PhD thesis ‘Hidden spaces, obscure purposes: the medieval ecclesiastical staircase, gallery and upper chamber in East Kent’ (University of Kent, 2008).

The Hasted Prize of £3000 is given for the thesis judged by a panel of specialists to be the best doctoral thesis on the history or archaeology of the County of Kent (including former parts of the County now within London). One thousand pounds of the Prize goes directly to the successful scholar; £2,000 is retained by the Society as a supplement towards publication of the work. Dr Celia Cordle’s thesis on Wealden hops, which won the Hasted Prize in 2007, is shortly to be published by the University of Hertfordshire Press.
